Multiple Myeloma Symptoms can be confused with other problems such as osteoporosis, arthritis or even chronic back pain. It is an insidious form of cancer, which, because of the way that the plasma cells in the bone marrow are involved, the cancer can spread easily throughout the body. The pain associated with multiple myeloma is extreme and requires very strong pain relief. Anemia and fatigue are also common since the production of blood cells is disrupted and the reduced production of platelets results in excessive bleeding.
Diagnosis of Multiple Myeloma involves detection of abnormal proteins in the blood and urine. X-rays can also show up areas of damage to the bone in various parts of the skeleton. Bone marrow biopsies can detect the change in numbers of plasma cells.
